Hideaway Beach Resort & Spa is a luxury boutique resort situated on the privately owned, previously uninhabited virgin island of Dhonakulhi in the Maldives. The island is a haven of peace, tranquility and serenity as it is one of a handful of resorts in the atoll, yet it boasts a state-of-the-art private marina which welcomes visiting yachts - the first of its kind in the Maldives.

Dhonakulhi is a large crescent-shaped island with a beach length of some 1.4 kilometres on each side and a width of 500 metres, surrounded by a waist-deep lagoon with crystal clear turquoise waters. The island is unique in its reef formation - the reef system it sits on halves a natural channel splitting it into two distinct parts thereby forming a natural harbour for the marina.

Ten different styles of villa are dotted among coconut groves and lush vegetation on the island, or are on stilts over the lagoon. Each of the luxurious villas has an island host to take care of all your needs and either offers direct access to the beach or into the lagoon, while the vast majority also have a private plunge pool or Jacuzzi.

A range of dining options include a waterfront bar and grill, a fine dining restaurant and a poolside cafe. Guests can also choose to enjoy a barbeque on the beach, an in-villa dinner or breakfast by their private pool.

Facilities at Hideaway Beach Resort & Spa include two swimming pools, a spa offering a vast range of luxurious treatments, a sports complex, tennis courts and a watersports centre. Land-based activities include yoga, basketball, football, table tennis and pool, while watersports include windsurfing, catamaran sailing, water skiing, wakeboarding and kiteboarding. Guests can learn to scuba dive with knowledgeable instructors, allowing them to discover a stunning underwater world with the Dhonakulhi reef sitting under 30 metres from the shore.

Families are well-catered for, thanks to family-friendly accommodation and a kids' club which organises a range of indoor and outdoor activities.

Our Opinion

Unlike most of the more remote islands in the Maldives, Island Hideaway is reached by a scheduled flight from Male followed by a short speedboat ride. It all seemed to work well and unlike a seaplane, it travels at night, so you can still get to Island Hideaway if you are on a flight that gets into Male at silly o’clock!

The island is big, so there is plenty of space and the rooms are very private as well as being MASSIVE! We had a dhonakulhi residence which had a large sitting room, with a lovely upstairs outside deck area, (perfect for breakfast) lovely bedrooms with a seriously oversized bed and a bath so big, you need to give your butler about 2 hours notice if you want a bath rather than a shower.

We were treated to dinner in the Gaafushi Restaurant where sushi was superb. Island Hideaway is pure luxury and of course that comes with a luxury price tag.
