Gili Lankanfushi is an environmentally friendly resort in the Maldives with a ‘no news, no shoes’ approach to barefoot luxury, occupying a small coral island with sophisticated accommodation and facilities. All of the spacious, beautifully crafted suites and villas are on stilts over the lagoon, some only be reached by boat to afford guests the maximum privacy.

Named 'Indian Ocean's Leading Resort' at the 2017 World Travel Awards, the emphasis at Gili Lankanfushi is on ensuring that guests totally relax by offering quality provision at every barefoot step - not only in the luxurious accommodation, superb dining and leisure pursuits, but also in the finishing touches, such as preloaded iPods and the huge scented candles in earthenware pots.

The majority of the accommodation at Gili Lankanfushi is accessed via one three jetties, offering privacy and constructed in natural materials including timber and thatch. Suites boast a large, open-air living area which opens onto a deck with hammocks and seating, surrounded by shallow crystal clear water. Meanwhile a rooftop terrace offers an additional space in which to relax with stunning, panoramic views. Crusoe Residences and the Private Reserve can only be reached by boat to promise total privacy, with the latter occupying 1400 square metres and accommodating up to 8 adults with a private spa facility and personal butler.

Gili Lankanfushi’s restaurants, swimming pool and tennis courts are all located on the main island, while the bar is set over the water to provide a unique, relaxing setting. The main restaurant offers a variety of fresh and local produce, while the Over Water Grill serves serves the freshest seafood and choice cuts of meat. By The Sea presents a fusion of Peruvian and Japanese cuisine in an intimate setting. Guests can also choose to dine in their villas, in the vegetable gardens, or in a range of private, island locations. They can also take the opportunity to join the sommelier in the underground cellar for wine, cheese and chocolate tastings.

Gili Lankanfushi offers an excellent range of watersports and a PADI accredited dive centre, while possible excursions including guided snorkelling and dolphin cruises.  Meera Spa offers a range of holistic therapies in an overwater setting with glass floor panels, allowing guests to take in panoramic ocean views.

The resort is committed to conservation and works hard to preserve the natural environment - buildings have been constructed using recycled and sustainably-sourced wood, organic toiletries are provided in refillable earthenware containers, the island's desalination plant provides bottled still and sparkling water, the vast majority of food waste is composted and used in the organic herb and veegatble garden, and guests are encouraged to recycle.

Gili Lankanfushi also recently opened a new marine biology centre called Gili Veshi, acting as a research facility as well as offering guest experiences - guests at the luxury resort can take part in activities such as reef cleaning and eco tours, as well as educational treasure hunts for children in and out of the water.

Gili Lankanfushi is a supremely luxurious, unique and romantic hotel and is highly recommended.

We enjoyed their fine dining menu one night and their live cooking extravaganza, but our evening dining in their Japanese Restaurant (By The Sea) proved a fitting finale to a lovely, and varied trip.
