Cotton House, Mustique, The Grenadines

Tropic Breeze Rating:5.0

The Cotton House is the only hotel on Mustique, arguably one of the most exclusive Caribbean islands in the heart of the Grenadines. The hotel is a hidden gem where guests can relax in luxurious surroundings, renowned to be one of the Caribbean's leading luxury resorts.

The Cotton House is an elegant, sophisticated hotel set on a private 13 acre estate, situated on a picturesque hillside overlooking the Caribbean Sea to the west and the Atlantic Ocean to the east.

The accommodation comprises of 17 guest rooms, recently renovated cottages, suites and the presidential Cotton Hill Residence. Each room has the finest linens, bathrobes and bathroom products with a twice daily personal maid service. The rooms benefit from stunning views, private patios or verandas, and some even have private plunge pools. All are well stocked with a TV, books, magazines with a large selection of DVDs and CDs being available at reception.

The Executive chef and his team at the Veranda Rsetaurant create a daily menu combining the freshest Caribbean ingredients with imported delicacies from around the world to result in a wonderful a la carte menu.  There's also a Beach Cafe, which has recently been refurbished, for lunch and cocktails plus The Great Room Bar which serves cocktails, juices, wines and champagne.  Here guests can play the piano and enjoy the manager’s weekly cocktail party.

The hotel sits between two beaches - both The Cotton House Beach and Endeavour Bay Beach are on the Caribbean Sea, while L'Ansecoy Beach is just a short stroll away and lies next to the Atlantic Ocean.

Guests at The Cotton House can enjoy numerous watersports including windsurfing, snorkeling and scuba diving, with private sailing charters available upon request.  Mustique has its own Equestrian Centre as well as four floodlit tennis courts, access to nature hikes, fitness trails and glorious strolls along the beaches.  Guests can also rent ‘a mule’ (a motorized golf buggy) or a Jeep ideal for island roads and terrain.  Sailing or boating excursions can be arranged to nearby islands or to go snorkeling at the Tobago Cays.  The hotel will even put together a picnic basket for you if you decide that island exploration is the order of the day!

The Cotton House Spa is just steps away from the beach with a wrap around veranda and fantastic views of the Caribbean Sea and the gardens from all four treatment rooms. The hotel is also home to a fitness centre with cardiovascular equipment and limited free weights, as well as a boutique offering the finest in Caribbean and European linen clothing, swimwear, china and gifts.

Located just 30 minutes by air from St Lucia, Mustique is exclusive while also being a family friendly destination – with an overall area just over 2 square miles, it is a safe environment with a beautiful selection of beaches. The island and the Cotton House itself both truly are hidden gems.

Our Opinion

As soon as I landed in Mustique, I knew I had landed somewhere special. The Cotton House is a stunning and exclusive resort, but maintains a relaxed and unfussy feel.  I would definitely recommend hiring a mule- not a donkey I hasten to add, but in fact a golf cart style buggy- and heading to one of the beautiful beaches such as Macaroni Beach, although be careful to avoid the 100’s of tortoises that seem to constantly be crossing the road!! Cotton House will send you off with a picnic lunch and many times you will have the beach to yourself.

The food is absolutely delicious at Cotton House, and I was lucky enough to experience the managers cocktail party which takes place once a week. I love the rooms here, and they are nicely spread out throughout the small plantation style resort. If you can stretch the budget to a Superior or Deluxe Suite, I would highly recommend them both!

No trip to Mustique would be complete without experiencing a Sunday night at the famous Basil’s Bar- music and amazing food for all ages. If you can drag yourself away from the tranquillity of Mustique though- even for one day- a trip to some of the other islands in the Grenadines, or the Tobago Cays is a must!
