Caribbean Holidays : Tobago : Language

special offers

The dialect spoken in Tobago is a curious mix which uses the English language as it's base, but depends strongly on traditional dialect when stronger illustration is needed. The local people do have the ability to converse, using impeccably correct grammar.

However they can just as easily exclude you from the same conversation, by changing the speed and pronunciation of the words to where it is virtually indistinguishable from the patois of the islands further north. Only after the passage of a few weeks, surrounded by the villagers and listening intently to their speech, can one identify the words as being part of the English language.
