Scuba diving in the Maldives
Scuba diving is the main attraction in the Maldives, and it's estimated that over 60% of visitors dive at least once. There are hundreds of recognised dive sites, many of which are accessible from resorts. Aside from numerous fish and corals, there's the thrill of diving with turtles, moray eels, manta rays, sharks and whales and exploring some of the Maldives accessible wrecks, including the Maldive Victory off Hulhule Airport, believed by many enthusiasts to be one of the most exciting wreck dives in the world. Virtually every resort runs a diving school to keep its guests occupied, but you can also just don a mask and flippers and swim a couple of strokes from a beach to enjoy the delights of the Maldives' submarine world.
Windsurfing and sailing in the Maldives
Windsurfing and catamaran sailing is available at most resorts, sometimes with tuition. The equipment is generally geared towards beginners and intermediates’ requirements although many watersports centres can offer a range of sails for windsurfers. The winds tend to be light – force 2-3 during December to March and stronger in the SouthEast Monsoon (April to November) occasionally reaching force 5-6.
Kitesurfing in the Maldives
A number of resorts have now introduced this exhiliarating new sport and some offer tuition. Please call us for the latest information if this sport is important to you on holiday.
Waterskiing, jetskis and banana rides in the Maldives
Many resorts have a back to nature, environmentally friendly approach and as such motorized watersports are not really compatible with this philosophy. However a few resorts offer these facilities,:- they tend to be available at the larger, mass market resorts. (In case you wondered banana rides are rides on a large inflatable tube towed behind a speedboat!)
Fishing in the Maldives
Big game fishing is an option at some resorts, but there is a 'tag and release' policy, so you can't keep your catch. If you can't get your fill in the daytime, you can also go night fishing on board a dhoni (a traditional boat).
Surfing in the Maldives
Surfing is popular in the islands since there are excellent breaks accessible from resorts close to Malé. Most of these are reef breaks and definitely not for the beginner! Surfing safaris to the outer atolls can also be arranged. If surfing is an important element of your holiday, please contact us for specialist advice about when & where to go and how to get your surfboard there! (Hire boards are not available).
