When to go

The drier period is during the north-east monsoon or ruvai, which lasts from December to March, which coincides with high season, due to lower rainfall and colder weather in Europe, which combine to increase demand. During this period, hotel rates are higher and many hotels are booked solid. Overbooking can be a problem with some hotels and in 2004 there were strict Government guidelines imposed to avoid the problem recurring.

The south-west monsoon or ulhangu lasts from April to November, and is wetter, with more storms and occasional strong winds. However daytime temperatures remain constant at about 28°C (82°F) all year. The humidity is slightly lower in the dry season but most days there's a cooling sea breeze. Some clients worry about the weather in this season. When it rains, - it really rains! But the downpours tend to be short, usually over in fifteen minutes. Within five minutes, the sun is out and the ground has dried. In our experience a full day’s rain is rare and a holiday in the low season can be just as enjoyable, with fewer people and better value for money.
