The island, which forms a nation along with neighbouring Nevis, was a British colony for 270 years until achieving independence in 1983. For many years sugar and tobacco growing dominated the landscape of St Kitts and while no longer a major contributor to the island's economy, many local people are still employed in its cultivation and processing.
St Kitts is a relatively small island and in five hours you can cycle around the entire island, taking in the breathtaking views along the way such as historical sites, tropical gardens and exotic beaches. For those who prefer hiking, there are plenty of trails which can be explored with a guide to learn about the beautiful flora and fauna around the island. Mount Liamuiga is a dormant volcano which offers stunning views from the summit, the island's highest point.
