Kanuhura is a unique island resort in the Maldives which is perfect for those seeking a luxurious yet laid-back castaway experience. Recently redesigned and refurbished to the highest standard, the family-friendly resort combines an informal style with stunning accommodation, exceptional facilities and fantastic service. The island itself is one of the biggest in the Maldives at over 1km long, surrounded by perfect white sand beaches and a sheltered lagoon, with two small private islands just a short boat ride away. Kanuhura is a member of the Luxury Hotels of the World group and was named 'Maldives' Leading Family Resort' at the 2017 World Travel Awards.
The exclusive holiday experience starts as soon as guests arrive in the Maldives, where they have access to a private lounge at Male Airport's seaplane terminal before boarding a 40 minute flight to the island. Guests are then greeted with a cocktail and transported to their villa by golf buggy, escorted by their dedicated villa host.
The accommodation is superb with eleven unique room categories, all with direct access to the beach or lagoon and many boasting their own private plunge pool. 80 beach and water villas have been constructed with natural materials such as cool stone and local wood and furnished in a sophisticated style that combines glamour with exotic gipsy influences. There are various options for families including villas with three bedrooms, spacious living areas and a private pool.
Guests have plenty of dining options to choose between, with everything from deli-style sandwiches to Asian fusion cuisine available. A Mano is the main restaurant where guests can choose from local market-style cooking stations, Bottega restaurant offers authentic Italian cuisine, Cowry Club is a poolside bar serving light lunches, Drift is a grill kitchen on a nearby desert island, and Deli serves up light snacks and picnic baskets. For special occasions, the Chef’s Herb Garden is a stunning location with a communal table set amid a beautiful hanging vegetable garden, or guests can enjoy a private dining experience on board a traditional Maldivian Dhoni or on a beach. Beachfront bars provide spaces in which to lounge with a cocktail, with music and games tables providing entertainment.
There are numerous ways for guests to spend their days while at Kanuhura, from exploring on the bicycles that are provided in all villas to discovering the fascinating underwater world. While many rooms boast their own private plunge pool, there is also a beautiful free form infinity pool overlooking the beach.
The resort’s water sports centre offers a vast range of water-based activities including complimentary kayaking and windsurfing, as well as boat trips, dolphin cruises and fishing excursions. Guests can snorkel off the beach where there are plenty of colourful fish, while the PADI 5* dive centre offers a first-class introduction to diving as well as unique excursions for experienced divers. Lhaviyani Atoll is known for its stunning underwater fauna and marine life offering some of the best dive sites in the world with over 40 sites plus two shipwrecks easily accessible from the resort. Activities on dry land include yoga, martial arts, tennis lessons and personal training sessions, as well as less strenuous options such as tours of the orchid garden which is home to over 7000 orchids, cocktail mixing classes, wine tasting sessions and cooking classes.
Guests can also paddleboard, kayak or hop on a boat to visit the two desert islands that are just a few hundred metres away, one of which is home to Drift Restaurant and is filled with wildlife, and the other which offers a true Robinson Crusoe style escape.
The KOKAA Wellness Retreat & Spa is an award-winning holistic sanctuary offering a diverse range of treatments from massages to mud wraps, with facilities including a fully equipped fitness centre, aerobics studio, Jacuzzis and sauna.
The resort is great for families thanks to the excellent activities including a floating water park and plenty of family-friendly accommodation options. There is also a great kids club for 4 to 11 year olds and a separate club for teenagers, both of which offer a programme of age-appropriate activities. A charming resort which offers pretty villas in a contemporary Maldivian style, all complete with the latest technology. The spa is wonderful and has a huge range of treatments as well as stone therapy and Maldivian Theyo Dhemun which uses rose oil.
The resort caters exceptionally well for children and has a dedicated kid’s club as well as children’s menus, infant purees and baby equipment.
Kanuhura offers something for everyone and despite having 100 villas, actually feels very small and low-key. I would recommend it for those looking for a stylish resort with great food, relaxed atmosphere and great facilities for families.
