Jo & Mark are just back from a trip to Jamaica, here Jo tells us all about their amazing experience and why they go back time after time.
Nestled high within the mountains of Jamaica lies Strawberry Hill, a unique and incredibly beautiful resort with views combining palm and pine trees, making it quite surreal. On being shown to our room we were greeted with a magnificent space of colonial styles featuring a balcony – perfect for that first morning coffee or evening tipple!
Strawberry Hill enables it’s guests to absorb the magnificent mountain views making it a truly tranquil destination. Whilst staying at Strawberry Hill we were invited to tour The Craighton House Coffee Estate. The tour of the house was both cultural and authentic, followed by a hike with our guide Dave through the Blue mountains. We were treated to one of the most fabulous lunches….Bun and Cheese, quite literally, served with fresh fruits carved as we sat underneath a waterfall. The bun was similar to a hot cross bun, minus the fruit and cross! Dave explained to us that this was traditionally eaten around Easter.
Evening drinks were served on the terrace against the backdrop of the Blue Mountains whilst overlooking the glistening lights of Kingston below. Strawberry Hill’s signature cocktail is a mix of strawberry pulp and sparkling wine, perfect! A very special mountain side resort and one that was frequented by the likes of Bob Marley and Mick Jagger, take a look at the photos around the bar!
Strawberry Hill is owned by Chris Blackwell, founder of Island Records, as was the next stop “GoldenEye”, a beach side resort favourite on the Island of Jamaica. Built on the land that was previously occupied by Ian Flemming’s house, GoldenEye is both luxurious and filled with Jamaican culture, “you can be James Bond for the day”, as they say here! A central island accessed by a footbridge provides the luxurious hub of this resort; including Beach Villas nestled into the white sand beach. The island’s resort beach bar hangs fresh bunches of bananas around by day for those peckish moments whilst the salt water lagoon provides the perfect backdrop for water sports, as tried and tested by me!
A large King size bed with fine linen sheets took centre of the room, complete with both internal and external bathroom’s. The large daybed opened onto a decked area with truly beautiful views providing the perfect relaxing oasis. The FieldSpa at GoldenEye on the waters edge offers holistic treatments and are the ultimate relax, grab your paddle board or kayak and access the spa by water. FieldSpa is the talking point in the Tropic Breeze Office’s and honestly we cannot wait to return, take a look here.
Whilst staying at the GoldenEye we booked to visit Noel Coward’s House, where he has been laid to rest within the grounds. The house is authentic and untouched since being lived in and offers the opportunity to admire the views that inspired him. Our trip was completed with a picnic of Canapés and Rum Punch as the sun went down- a great way to absorb some true Jamaican culture. Visit Tripadvisor here to see what other visitors thought.
Next we visited the famous Jamaica Inn, situated on 750ft of private white sandy beach with all rooms offering an ocean view. The Morrow family has privately owned the Jamaica Inn since being built in the 1950’s and is likely to be the reason that the resort offers an indulgent experience with attentive and charming staff focussed on offering the highest standards of service. Featuring only 48 Suites and Cottages, Jamaica Inn provides a personal service, perhaps a reason why many iconic celebrities including Marilyn Monroe have frequented the resort.
Our final destination was the stunning Round Hill; this resort features private Villa’s (in addition to their guest rooms) that can accommodate whole groups or be split into two. The grounds feature an organic garden, which is used to gather produce for the kitchen- the ultimate in eco friendly luxury! Round Hill is well known for both its service and luxury including Round Hill’s spa; which is one of the best on the Island. The 18th Century Plantation house spa is situated in private grounds on the resort. The resort does cater for Children with their Kid’s club and Nanny service allowing for a perfect family experience – a perfect family getaway!
After having started high in the mountains and driving through Jamaica, we set off in our private small plane from Montego Bay back to Kingston. We were in awe of the sight of the mountains and the coastline, the very reason Jamaica will forever be a favourite here at Tropic Breeze.
