Chocolate experiences in Grenada

Posted on

With Easter weekend fast approaching, the shops are filled with chocolate of all shapes and sizes. But where in the Caribbean can chocolate lovers go to sample the delicious treat and learn more about its production? Grenada!

Known as the Spice Island due to the vast quantities of spices that are produced, Grenada is also becoming increasingly well known for its thriving cocoa industry and we can confirm that the final product is among the finest we have tasted!  The island is home to a number of cocoa plantations and chocolate factories which guests can visit to learn more about the industry and sample exquisite chocolate.

True Blue Bay Resort is an ideal destination for those who would like to sample the island’s cuisine and experience local culture. Chocolate tastings and cooking classes are held every week, while the resort’s spa even offers treatments using chocolate. The property’s popular restaurant, The Dodgy Dock, holds regular theme nights which allow guests to try local street food and Grenadian dishes accompanied by live bands and steel pan music. The resort also organises the island’s annual chocolate festival and is linked to the House of Chocolate in Saint George’s – see more below.

Grenada Chocolate Fest

Taking place from 11 – 19 May, Grenada Chocolate Fest is back for a fifth year and celebrates the island’s organic and ethically produced cocoa and chocolate. Visitors to the island can meet cocoa farmers, learn about the chocolate-making process, wander through cacao forests and of course, sample plenty of delicious treats!

The House of Chocolate

Visit the House of Chocolate in Saint George’s, a mini-museum dedicated to the history of cocoa where visitors can learn about the product’s health benefits, grind their own cocoa nibs and hand paint their own chocolate bars. A small café serves delicious cocoa-infused treats including chocolate made onsite, while the shop sells a variety of cocoa-related products.

Belmont Estate

This 17th century cocoa plantation is one of the most popular tourist attractions in Grenada with an organic farm, gardens, museum and restaurant. Visitors can go on hands-on tours through the estate to learn about cocoa and its transformation into chocolate, with the opportunity to visit the cocoa fields and taste fresh beans. The restaurant serves typical Grenadian cuisine followed by desserts made from the plantation’s own organic chocolate.
