Bajan Rum Shop Crawl

See an authentic side to Barbados at night on a guided tour of some of the many small bars which are known as rum shops, where most customers are locals but tourists are warmly welcomed. Bars are colourful and typically Caribbean yet completely unique, some attached to their owner’s house and others with karaoke and disco lights. This fantastic tour, organised by West Indian International Tours, was a highlight of travel specialist Helen’s recent trip to Barbados!


St. Nicholas Abbey Heritage Railway

An exciting new attraction, part of St. Nicholas Abbey Great House Plantation and Distillery, this steam locomotive journey takes you through the plantation fields and mahogany woods, offering expansive views of the east coast of the island from Cherry Tree Hill.


Andromeda Botanical Gardens

A member of the Barbados National Trust, these stunning gardens are located on the east coast of Barbados and are well worth a visit! The creative gardens were established by a Chelsea Flower Show gold medal winner and are home to an abundance of tropical flowers and unique trees as well as hummingbirds, butterflies and monkeys – a real delight.


Horse Racing at Garrison Savannah

Horse racing is a popular pastime in Barbados,  taking place at the historic Garrison Savannah near Bridgetown, one of the oldest race courses in the Americas. A day at the races is great fun for all the family, popular with locals and tourists alike – spend the afternoon enjoying the lively atmosphere with a picnic and a rum punch, perhaps placing a few bets on the colourful races. The Sandy Lane Gold Cup is the most important event in the racing calendar, taking place in March each year and attracting some of the top international jockeys and trainers.


Catamaran cruises

Set sail on one of the luxurious catamarans that offers boat trips along the west coast of Barbados, including Seaduced and Cool Runnings. Helen recently enjoyed an afternoon on Cool Runnings, featuring a stop where passengers could snorkel with tropical fish and sea turtles followed by a delicious buffet dinner on board with reggae music playing and rum flowing, finally returning to Bridgetown as the sun set.
