“WE ARE LIKE ISLANDS IN THE SEA, SEPARATE ON THE SURFACE, BUT CONNECTED ON THE DEEP.”

William James

Silky soft white beaches. Deep blue waters, teeming with life and laughter. Pristine, untouched coastlines that stretch for miles. Authentic cuisine and iconic, world-renowned rum. An atmosphere of vibrancy and relaxation, steeped in a culture rich with history and local hospitality. This may sound like some long-lost paradise island… but you can find all this and so much more in the captivating, exotic country of Barbados.

Whether you’re in search of luxury, adventure, unique wildlife, gourmet meals, a vivacious nightlife, or just a warm welcome – in Barbados, your search is over.

Food & drink

Mount Gay Distillery

Locally caught fish, fresh fruits and juices, home-grown grass-fed meats, sweet plantains, rice and peas, classic curries and rotis – whatever your taste, you’re sure to find it here.

Barbados mealtimes can be as formal or casual as you wish. Many bars and cafés have a barefoot policy, so you can walk straight from the sand to your seat, with food and drinks served 24 hours a day. For a level of luxury and a chance to enjoy some high-class Caribbean food, there are also the stunning clifftop restaurants, known as The Cliff and The Animal Flower Cave Restaurant – gorgeous meals with gorgeous views.

Barbados is infamously the birthplace of rum. Founded in 1703, Mount Gay Distillery is believed to be the oldest rum in the world, and the drink has become an enormous staple of Caribbean culture, celebrated by all from farmers to businessmen from all walks of the island. You can book a guided rum tour, to take you to all corners of the island tasting the best rum the country has to offer. Or go for a more genuine experience and hop between the local rum bars, sampling the drinks, the locals, the entertainment, and even sometimes, the celebrities!

Beaches & water sports

Swim, surf, or sail

Make a splash in some of the clearest, bluest waters our planet has to offer. Barbados beaches are breathtaking, with powder white sand beneath the toes, palm trees swaying gently in the tropical breeze, and warm, reliable waters, perfect for a huge host of activities. With more than 80 beaches to explore, some popular with tourists and some hidden gems, you’re sure to find the one for you.

If you’re looking to get that adrenaline pumping, there are a range of exciting water sports, including jet-skiing, kitesurfing, boogie boarding, and diving opportunities. A great choice for active families and adventurous couples alike. You can skipper a Hobie Cat or kayak, take a deep-sea fishing charter, or just spend a relaxing day aboard an extravagant catamaran, living life in the luxury you deserve.

Nature & wildlife

A Hawksbill turtle

The Hawksbill turtle. The red-footed tortoise. Green monkeys. Flying fish. Whistling frogs. Barbados is simply teeming with wildlife and fauna to discover.

With warm temperatures, good visibility and reliable sea conditions, Barbados is the perfect place to go diving all year round. Boats are available on the beaches to take you out to sea to meet the incredible endangered species, the Leatherback and Hawksbill turtle. Conservation efforts are taken very seriously on the island, and as such, both turtle species have seen a resurgence, with many being so friendly with humans they allow you to swim up beside them. There is also an incredible melting pot of fish varieties, both to admire and set your line out for.

If you have keen interest in exotic wildlife, the best place to go is the internationally acclaimed Barbados Wildlife Reserve. Here you will uncover the mischievous green monkeys, macaws and love birds, tropical butterflies, all preserved for your entertainment and the island’s conservation programme, within a stunning natural mahogany forest.

Activities & adventure

Explore under the sea

Barbados is a picture-perfect place for relaxation, but lazing on the sandy beaches might not be for everyone. For the more adventurous travel goer, jump back into the sea for a mysterious dive at a wrecked ship, by yourself or as part of a group, and see what treasures you can find at the bottom of the ocean. Rock up next to the local fishermen – they know the best spots – and spend the day catching marlin and kingfish and preparing your own traditional Caribbean feast.

Back on land, there is still plenty to see and do. The Bushy Park Racing Circuit gives you the chance to live out the life of a race car driver! Race around a sleek, professional track as fast as you can go. There are multiple locations to rent ATV’s, motorbikes and mountain bikes too, so you can get round the island in style. The alluring Harrison’s Cave, with its array of stalagmites and stalactites and overwhelming natural beauty, offers tours and hikes of varying difficulties, and the opportunity to navigate uncharted, unknown territory.

History & heritage

Codrington College

Barbados was originally inhabited by Carib and Arawak Native Americans before being colonised by the English in the early 17th century. Heavily impacted by the Slave Trade and the plantations that cluttered the once untouched island, Barbados became the world’s largest producer of sugar by 1650. It is the oldest continuing parliamentary democracy outside England. Due to this, you may find familiar long held traditions that reflect those of the United Kingdom. English is the main spoken language, a pidgin version of English called Bajan, that combines English and West African dialects.

Universal voting rights were achieved in 1943 and full independence in 1966. As of 2022 and the passing of Queen Elizabeth II, Barbados is now a republic.
