Young Island St Vincent, The Grenadines
Young Island is an all-inclusive, private island resort in the Grenadines located close to the coast of St Vincent. It was one of the Caribbean’s first private island resorts and maintains a traditional feel and excellent service that has been established over its 30 year history. Thanks to its location, Young Island feels perfectly remote and offers a Robinson Crusoe feeling, whilst still being able to visit nearby islands.
Accommodation is in cottages and suites which are either on the beach or up the hillside, each with a private terrace and private garden shower. Some room types have a private plunge pool and separate sitting area, while others accommodate families in two bedrooms.
Dining is certainly a celebrated aspect of Young Island, with an emphasis on local cuisine, a daily changing menu and a beautiful restaurant location where guests are seated under individual thatched gazebos. Weekly entertainments includes cocktail parties and barbecues with a local steel band. The resort is known for the freshly baked breads that are served with every meal, with flavours including banana, cinnamon and raisin. The infamous Coconut bar is just a short swim from the beach, allowing guests to sip the freshest cocktails on a floating platform - certainly a unique backdrop for that afternoon Mojito! Of course there is also a full bar back on the island too.
There are varied activities on offer including tennis and complimentary water sports, plus facilities such as a swimming pool and a hillside spa which sits amongst tropical foliage.
A Sailaway package is available which allows guests to spend a few days on dry land then go sailing around the Grenadines on a catamaran with a skipper and cook. Guests stay on board for 2 or 3 nights, visiting destinations including Bequia, Mustique and the Tobago Cays. Days will be spent snorkelling, catching fresh fish for dinner and watching the sunset from the Water.
Access to Young Island is via Barbados, making this a fantastic twin-centre combination where you can enjoy the buzz of the popular island before relaxing in an authentic, private island retreat. There is a complimentary 24 hour ferry service in operation on demand to St Vincent, where guests can visit a range of tourist attractions including botanic gardens and waterfalls.
I stayed at Young Island earlier this year, and found myself captivated by it's Caribbean charm. If you are looking for a true hidden gem, this natural, lush and very pretty island in The Grenadines will not disappoint. It does not offer contemporary luxury, but what it does offer is great service, with an authentic feel of the Caribbean hospitality, great staff and a real home from home feel. The food is simple but tasty, with the menu changing daily, and you will always be recommended to try one of the many delicious home-made breads on offer which is an absolute must.
The rooms have had a recent soft furnishings update so do not be put off by their slightly dated website! If you can stretch your budget a little, upgrade to one of the hillside rooms with your own pool, which offer fantastic views out across the Caribbean sea and across to St Vincent.
I loved this island so much, I am returning for my own holiday later this year, and cannot wait.
