St Lucia : Things to do in St Lucia

Activities & excursions

- Attend a street party at Gros Islet. Every Friday night there is a street party or 'jump up' at Gros Islet (opposite Marigot Bay), frequented by locals and visitors, who dance throughout the streets to music from bars and café's and the occasional local band. The party tends to start about 10.00pm and lasts well into the small hours.

- Visit Soufriere Sulphur Springs, the world’s only drive-in volcano. The dormant volcano was about 10 miles in diameter before it erupted and imploded into itself some 40,000 years ago, La Soufriere still emits odorous gases and vapours constantly, which you can smell as you approach! There are local guides and a path to several viewing galleries overlooking sections of the crater and bubbling pools of steaming water and mud, some of which you can bathe in.

- Dine on fresh fish at Anse Le Raye's Fish Fry. Every Friday, the usually sleepy fishing village of Anse Le Ray comes to life when crowds flock to eat freshly barebecued fish, often served along with fish cakes, Johnny cakes and of course cold beer or rum punches, together with the inevitable reggae pulse!

- Soar above the trees on one of the island’s zip lines which go through rainforests the Treetop Adventure Park in Dennery or through cocoa and coffee plantations with views of the Pitons at Morne Coubaril Estate. At the Morne Coubaril Estate visitors can also learn about the history and the running of the plantation, or go horse riding around the estate.

- Hike along the Tet Paul Nature Trail near Soufriere where you will encounter stunning views of the Pitons as well as the islands of Martinique and St Vincent

- Explore the Pigeon Island National Park, formerly a lookout point and military base which is joined to the mainland by a sandy causeway. Visitors can discover a range of historic sites including forts and barracks.

- Take a Segway tour along the nature trail which climbs Mount Pimard in Rodney Bay, where you will witness spectacular views of St Lucia’s coastline and find historic sites such as military bunkers.

- Ride through the beautiful Fond Estate on a quad bike, following trails through tropical landscapes in the west of the island.

- Climb Gros Piton with a guide, taking approximately two hours to trek to the summit.

- Snorkel or scuba dive in the Marine Park which surrounds Anse Chastanet Resort, where a coral reef is home to a great variety of exotic fish.

- Spend a few hours at Splash Island Water Park, an inflatable floating playground in Rodney Bay Village. The first of its kind in the Caribbean, the water park is located at Bay Gardens Beach Resort and consists of features including a trampoline, monkey bars, a swing and slide.

- Enjoy the ‘Tree to Bar’ experience at Boucan by Hotel Chocolat, beginning with a walk through the estate’s cocoa groves, allowing visitors to learn about the harvest and all stages of production, and ending with making a chocolate bar.

See ‘When to go’ for more information about local events.

Places of interest

- Fregate Island Nature Reserve. Situated on the rugged east coast at Praslin Bay, Fregate Island Nature Reserve is named after the Frigate birds that nest on two offshore islands between May and July. Access to the nesting islands is prohibited but there is a mile-long guided walk on the mainland, from which there are several good vantage points. Just to the north, the eastern nature trail starts, offering a more adventurous 3.5 mile hike along some stunning coastline.

- Diamond Falls Botanical Gardens near Soufriere, a six acre site with a diverse range of tropical flowers and plant life as well as a waterfall and hot mineral springs.

- Rodney Bay Village, home to a vast selection of shops, restaurants, and bars which are centred around a marina as well as a long stretch of beach.

- Castries, the capital city of St Lucia which retains colonial architecture as well as an excellent market where shoppers can buy local crafts, t shirts and souvenirs along with some great food and spices.

- Anse Mamin, a small yet stunning beach at Anse Chastanet Resort with a laid back beach grill serving excellent burgers.
