Travel Specialist Jessie travelled to St Kitts and Nevis in October and spent some time exploring both islands, as well as visiting a selection of hotels. Separated by a 2km channel of water, St Kitts and Nevis work well as a twin centre destination, and either island can be easily combined with Antigua as part of an island hopping itinerary. Jessie was excited to visit these two intimate islands, both of which are an ideal choice for the Caribbean traveller looking to go a little off the beaten track.
St Kitts
St Kitts is a charming island with picturesque estate houses, uncrowded beaches and friendly locals. Jessie spent her first evening on the island trying out a local restaurant – Boozie’s – where she had a fantastic dinner on the beach. The following morning, she visited Liamuiga Natural Farm, where she enjoyed breakfast before embarking on a leisurely tour of the organic farm. This was followed by a delicious lunch, where she was able to sample some of the farm’s produce.
One of Jessie’s trip highlights was having the opportunity to snorkel in the crystal clear waters just off St Kitts. This was her first time snorkelling in the Caribbean and she was impressed by the colourful marine life. Another highlight was dinner at Sunset Reef that evening. She was blown away by this boutique hotel, which boasts an infinity pool and stunning sunset views. Jessie loved the hotel’s secluded location and the extensive menu offered at the Drop Anchor Grill.
Nevis
Nevis is reached from St Kitts by a short boat transfer. The island offers stunning tropical scenery, secluded beaches and an authentic taste of the Caribbean. Visitors can enjoy rainforest hiking trails, climb Nevis Peak at the centre of the island, or simply enjoy the slow pace of island life. There is also plenty of history to discover – on her travels, Jessie passed The Cottle Church, built in the 19th Century and ruined over the years as a result of hurricane and earthquake damage.
Jessie highly recommends lunch at Bananas, a fantastic restaurant tucked away above the historic Hamilton Estate. Bananas boasts colourful décor, local cuisine and some of the best rum punch on the island. Jessie tried the West Indian Roti, but said everything looked delicious. After lunch, she was off to the Clifton Estate for a rum tasting. She even had the chance to pour and cork her own bottle of rum, which she brought back for the Tropic Breeze team to sample!
