The Last House, Sri Lanka

The Last House is named so as was the last commission of Sri Lanka’s famous architect Geoffrey Bawa. Located a few miles from the fishing town of Tangalle, this boutique hotel is set on what has to be one of the most beautiful beaches in the south of the island. Spend some time exploring the pretty gardens before heading through the unassuming garden gate and walking out onto the unspoilt beach, where tropical palms meet golden sand. The local area is popular for surfing, and the hotel has surf boards for guests to borrow. If you are staying for a little longer, you may wish to take a day trip to Udawalawe National Park, most famous for its high concentration of elephants.

A truly bespoke stay

Geoffrey Bawa’s designs are all about bringing the outside into interior spaces. The design of the building for example allows for air flow through the property, minimising the need for air-conditioning. All rooms are individually designed and each offers a stunning ocean view. Dining at The Last House is also a very individual experience, allowing guests to experience authentic and local flavours in a way that is highly personalised. For something really special, guests can enjoy a barbecue on the beach overlooking the Indian Ocean.

Our opinion

The beach at The Last House is simply breath-taking. It’s rare that you come across such an unspoilt and deserted stretch of beach, and that really sets this property apart for me. Aside from that, everything feels very tailor-made and personalised here, and the staff really just want to make your stay as special as possible.

The Last House has just 5 individually designed rooms. Décor is generally a mixture of fresh white walls and colourful designs, antique and contemporary furniture and plenty of art work. All rooms have air conditioning, Wi-Fi and offer luxury in-room amenities. The Last House can also be booked for exclusive use

Location: The Last House is located just outside the fishing town of Tangalle on Sri Lanka’s south coast, approximately 3 hours drive from Colombo International Airport.

Children: Children over the age of 10 are welcome at The Last House (unless the hotel is being booked for exclusive use, in which case there are no age restrictions)

Experiences: Visit Tangalle - explore the local produce available at the bustling market and visit the colourful harbourside; Dolphin & Whale Watching in Mirissa - take a 3-4 hour boat trip in search of the whales and dolphins who inhabit this coastline; Visit the Elephant Transit Home and Udawalawe National Park - visit the elephant orphanage at feeding time, before heading to the national park for a Jeep safari; Visit Galle Fort - take a guided tour of this UNESCO World Heritage Site; Surfing - visit the small horse-shoe bay of Hiriketiya, considered one of the best spots for year round surfing.
