Waraka Udawalawe, Sri Lanka

Waraka is an intimate hotel tucked away on the banks of a tranquil river and just 15 minutes drive from the entrance to Udawalawe National Park. Udawalawe is much quieter than Yala National Park, and you would be missing out if you didn’t go on a jeep safari during your stay at Waraka. Look out for elephants, water buffalo, monkeys, spotted deer and crocodiles, to name just a few! The hotel is surrounded by nature, and guests can head out on a guided walk or bicycle tour to a nearby village or take a kayak out on the river. Alternatively, you may just wish to spend some time lounging by the pool or on the riverside deck.

Sustainable accommodation & dining

Sustainability is at the heart of Waraka Udawalawe, and the buildings themselves really blend with the natural landscape thanks to thoughtful designs and careful tree planting. Floor to ceiling windows mean that rooms feel bright and airy, and if you stay in an upper floor room you almost feel like you are amongst the trees. The restaurant serves superb a la carte meals, and be sure to take a close look at the furnishings - the tables are made from old-fashioned sewing machines, and the light fittings are made from recycled glass bottles.

Our opinion

I was blown away by this hotel. The design is stunning and the buildings almost look like they belong there amidst the trees. It’s worth going on an early safari drive so that you can return to the hotel for an indulgent breakfast and spend the rest of the morning relaxing on the riverside deck.
