The Villa Bentota blends heritage with chic and contemporary design. The property was once owned by Sri Lanka’s most famous architect Geoffrey Bawa, so the architecture of course is stunning. Located in Bentota, a popular beach resort on Sri Lanka’s west coast, this property has the rather unique feature of a railway line passing through its gardens! Guests can unwind on comfortable loungers beside the pool or stroll through the tranquil gardens to the beach - both offer a great way to while away the day. The Bentota area meanwhile offers plenty in the way of activities, from watersports on Bentota Lagoon to boat safaris in the nearby wetlands.

A boutique hotel stay

Villa Bentota really feels more like a home than a hotel. The rooms feel stylish yet homely, and there is just something about the atmosphere that makes you feel instantly relaxed. For an intimate property, there are an impressive range of dining options, from modern Sri Lankan cuisine in the restaurant to western-inspired menus in a laid back setting overlooking the palm-shaded lawns. For something really special though, we’d suggest ordering a cocktail to your lounger on the private beach and watching the sun go down over the ocean.

Our opinion

The gardens at Villa Bentota are stunning. I loved watching the occasional train rumble past - it might sound a little odd having a trainline going through the grounds, but it’s so unique and really adds something to the atmosphere! The hotel itself is so charming, and the attention to detail in the rooms really stood out to me.

Location: Villa Bentota is located on Sri Lanka’s west coast, around 1 hour and 50 minutes drive from Colombo International Airport

Children: Children are welcome at The Villa Bentota. There is a children’s pool and a children’s menu offered in the restaurant, but there is no Kids Club

Experiences: Visit Kosgoda Turtle Hatchery - learn about the various turtle species and gain an insight into the conservation efforts being undertaken to protect this endangered species; Tropical Garden Tour - visit Lunuganga, the extensive estate of Geoffrey Bawa and the tropical gardens of his brother Bevis Bawa; Watersports in Bentota - a range of motorised and non-motorised watersports are available; Madhu Ganga Boat Safari - pass through pristine mangrove forests and see a variety of wildlife, before stopping at a cinnamon estate.

Dining: The Main Restaurant specialises in contemporary Sri Lankan cuisine using locally sourced produce. Bawa’s Bar offers a western-inspired menu alongside a tempting selection of cocktails.
